Provide veterinary technical support to all Laboratory Animal Resources Facilities.
The veterinary technician, under the supervision of the attending veterinarian, is responsible for supplies and equipment and provides technical support, including induction, maintenance, and documentation during anesthesia and post operative care for all USDA regulated animals.
Manages the Environmental Enrichment Program:
- Develops and documents the environmental enrichment programs for all laboratory animals, in particular the enrichment program for the non-human primates in collaboration with the Principal Investigators and Husbandry Services.
Manages the procurement, use and sale of veterinary drugs and supplies:
- Maintains a reasonable stock of drugs and supplies used in the appropriate care of laboratory animals.
- Ensures, that drugs and supplies are not out of date
- Administers the dispensing of controlled drugs under the direct supervision of the attending veterinarian and according to state and federal guidelines.
Ensures that appropriate safety protocols are followed when hazardous materials are used in connection with research animals.
First Responder:
- Keeps records and determines the appropriate treatment for sick animals in consultation with the attending veterinarian and the researchers.
-Participates in the delivery of timely treatments as needed including off hours and on weekends.
- Monitors and documents reports by location for the attending veterinarian.
Responsible for the coordination of the rodent quality assurance program.
Responsible for the review of all health reports for incoming of animals from approved vendors and conducting intake checks on all USDA regulated species.
Shipping and receiving coordinator for all animal sent or received from non-commercial sources.
Essential Qualifications Required:
BA/BS in Animal Science or related field and/or
- Veterinary Technology Degree from an AVMA accredited school and/or
- Laboratory Animal Technologist certification and
- Minimum 2-3 years experience working with non-human primates in a responsibility described above.
The final candidate will be required to successfully pass a background check.
