"The Vet Tech program is great because Manor's on-campus laboratories allow me to get hands-on experience with small and large animals." (2006 graduate)

Veterinary Technology A.S. Degree

The Veterinary Technology Department offers majors in two areas of study. These are:

Veterinary Technology Major

The Veterinary Technology major, is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association and prepares students for careers in a wide range of animal related fields. Graduates may become certified as Veterinary Technicians upon successful completion of the Veterinary Technician National Examination, which is offered in Harrisburg in January and June of each year.

Certified Veterinary Technicians are employed by veterinary practices, biomedical research facilities, wildlife rehabilitation centers, pet stores, pharmaceutical companies, universities and government agencies. Duties include all aspects of the care and treatment of animals other than diagnosis, prescription and surgery. Click here for Information About Veterinary Technology

Laboratory Animal Science - Another Career Avenue

After six months of employment in a laboratory animal facility, graduates in Veterinary Technology are eligible to take the level one certification examination that is given by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS). Successful completion of the examination certifies graduates as Assistant Laboratory Animal Technicians (ALAT). ALAT's are employed by biomedical research institutions to monitor animal health, maintain records, assist research scientists and maintain animal facilities. Students directed toward laboratory animal science may begin completion of the six month work requirement during the summer after the freshman year and during the sophomore externship experience.

The Pre-Veterinary Science Transfer curriculum offers a solid foundation in mathematics, and science to students who wish to pursue a Bachelors degree. After two years of study at Manor College, students receive an Associate in Science degree, and can then transfer to a four year college.  This major is designed to support students who ultimately plan to attend Veterinary Medical School after completing four-years of undergraduate study.

Academic Policy

Students must attain a grade of "C" or better in all Veterinary Technology courses and specialized science and mathematics courses including, but not limited to; Core Math, BI 204, CH 101 and BI 206. Any student with a final grade of "D" or "F" in any one of these courses will be required to repeat the course. A student who receives a "D" or "F" in a repeated veterinary technology, science or math courses will be dismissed from the Program. Students who fail to maintain a 2.0 average in their area of specialization incurs probationary status. Students with a cumulative grade point average of less than 2.0 in veterinary technology, science and mathematics courses for two successive semesters will be dismissed from the Program.

Students may not begin their externship (VT 229) unless a GPA greater than 2.2 is obtained in all veterinary technology, science and mathematics courses. In addition, a grade of "D" or "F" in two or more externship rotations will result in dismissal from the Program. Dismissal from an externship site because of incompetence qualifies as a failure. This applies to all veterinary technology students regardless of the date when matriculation was initiated.
