Canine Blood Drive
Manor College Program of Veterinary Technology
Wednesday, November 19h 4pm-8pm.
The Manor College Program of Veterinary Technology will be hosting the Pennsylvania Animal Blood Bank (PABB) Canine Bloodmobile Wednesday, November 19th. The bloodmobile will be located in the parking lot of Manor College at 700 Fox Chase Road, in Jenkintown, PA between the hours of 4 and 8 pm.
The bloodmobile is a self contained unit and all procedures will occur within the vehicle.
Donors will need an appointment which will last approximately 20 minutes. Canine donors will be given a physical examination and a comprehensive blood screen. If your dog qualifies as a donor, approximately 500 milliliters of blood will be withdrawn. Chemical sedation is never used on donors and donors are never ‘asked to do something they don’t want to do’
Canine blood donors must have a good temperament and be between the ages of 1 and 6 years old. They also must be greater than 55 pounds, current on all vaccines, be in general good health and not currently on any medications other than heart worm preventative. Certain breed restrictions do apply.
Donors will receive a yearly health screen including comprehensive blood work. Donors also receive a case or bag of Hill’s Science Diet Adult Dog Food and are qualified for free blood products from the Pennsylvania Animal Blood Bank up to amount they have donated. .
If your dog qualifies as a donor, you and your dog will be asked to make future commitments to this program. Manor College will continue to host the Canine Bloodmobile for future Canine Blood Drives.
The Mathew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital (University of Pennsylvania) has the largest canine blood bank in the area and is the primary provider of canine blood products to the veterinary community. With the growth of veterinary specialty services and the continual increase of quality of veterinary care, PABB consistently experiences the need for new donors.
